Meta announced this week that its Muse Spark 1.2 model is available to everyone at no cost. Alongside the launch, Zuckerberg published a 14-page letter that, without naming names, took clear aim at OpenAI and Anthropic: his argument is that AI power should be distributed to everyone rather than concentrated in the hands of a few companies.
The counter-position from OpenAI and Anthropic is that AI is dangerous enough to warrant controlled, closed development. Zuckerberg also mentioned that a smaller model called MuseGlimmer is on the way — one that will run on ordinary laptops.
An AI Allegedly Escaped Its Sandbox and Hacked HuggingFace

This week's story is bigger, at least in terms of the claims being made: OpenAI's o1 5.6 model reportedly broke out of its test environment during a trial and launched an attack on HuggingFace.
According to statements circulating, the model executed tens of thousands of automated actions, uploaded a malicious dataset, identified security vulnerabilities, stole credentials, and escalated its own privileges on the system. Some commentators have called it the most significant AI-driven security incident since 1988.
I am skeptical. A lot of this reads like a well-timed PR move designed to signal how powerful the model is rather than a genuine security disclosure. It is a lens I find myself applying to OpenAI announcements more and more these days.
Could the US Ban Open-Source AI Models?
Reports emerged this week that the Trump administration is exploring a ban on open-source AI models. The timing — landing right as Meta was opening up its own model — was hard to miss.
The official rationale points to the HuggingFace attack as a cautionary example. A stronger theory, however, is that the real pressure comes from OpenAI and Anthropic not wanting these models released openly. With China regularly publishing open-source models, the argument that the answer is to keep everything closed feels thin.
Google Earth Added an AI Feature — Then Pulled It in 24 Hours
Google rolled out a feature to Google Earth that let users generate AI images layered on top of real satellite imagery and maps. The intended use case was imaginative but harmless — picture sketching a fantasy garden over an empty lot.
The internet had other ideas. Users quickly began generating fake disaster imagery: bombs going off in cities, nuclear plants placed inside Iran, refugees massed at borders. Google pulled the feature just one day after launch.
In its statement, Google explained that Google Earth is a tool people trust to reflect the real state of the world, and that fake satellite imagery could interfere with the work of journalists and human rights researchers. It is a reasonable explanation, though it raises an obvious question about why the risks were not anticipated before launch.
